Play is the language of children. It is an essential part of a child’s learning and development. It facilitates the child to further enhance cognitive, psychomotor and social capabilities. It also serves as a channel for their creativity in which a child can express his thoughts and emotions.

Parents play a crucial role in stimulating a child’s development. During this important time, it is their responsibility to provide an advantageous environment for physical and intellectual growth. It can be very difficult to understand how best you can provide this because you cannot control or predict every aspect of his educational atmosphere. The first step often involves identifying and recognizing each child’s strengths and weaknesses. This can be tricky for each child is different. The only thing you can do is to have constant interaction with your child and provide guidance in order for them to develop new skills in the most positive way.

Unfortunately in this modern time, parents do not exactly have the time to interact with their children personally. This leads to a decline in effective stimulation and the learning experience. Although parent participation is very significant in this process, the good news is educational toys can be used as substitutes. You just have to choose the best toy for your child.

A wide variety of choices for toys are offered in the market, so as a parent it may be a little bit overwhelming. You are faced with the dilemma on choosing the toy that will suit your child best. The best guide is to have a thorough understanding of the developmental milestones of a child and how appropriate toys can boost their imagination and creativity. But if you are still a bit confused, here are some tips to find the ideal toy:

• Safety first. Make sure the toy is safe, durable and appropriate for a child’s age. Follow the recommended age guidelines to avoid accidents such as choking.
• Take your time in making a decision. Examine the toy first and think over the educational benefits it can offer. It should encourage imagination and inventiveness.
• The toy is easy to use. It is important that the child is able to play with the toy himself in order for him to enjoy it.
• The fun value is also a factor in choosing a toy. The toy may hold educational benefits but if it does not satisfy a child’s curiosity it will be quickly thrown aside and forgotten.
• Find a toy that is specifically the child’s style and interest. This will give the child determination to learn and have fun at the same time.
• Choose toys that will promote social skills. These toys will encourage cooperation and compromise by playing with other children.
• Budget-friendly. Choose toys that fit your budget. Good toys are not necessarily pricey.

Keep in mind these helpful tips the next time you find yourself looking for the perfect toy. It may seem challenging at first but remember that your child’s future is in your hands. Embrace the significance of providing the right educational toys to provide your child the best foundation for learning.

Toys, like childhood itself, mean different things to different people. To the average European or American parent, a toy serves to keep the young amused and distracted. Now more than ever, with the belief that multiple intelligences can be stimulated in the early years, toy manufacturers are gearing their products towards those than can keep children beguiled, occupied and instructed. For instance, toys should help the child develop his motor skills, and engage him in fantasy and investigative play.

For the child, an ornate piece that to adult eyes is essentially decorative and fixed, or a mechanized object kept as a curiosity can count as a plaything. As a result, experts have classified many objects as being on the borderline between toy and decorative object, between puerile replica and collector’s item. Such overlapping cannot be sidestepped nowadays, especially since toy collecting by adults in the United States and some European countries has emerged as a popular form of expertise.

Despite such borderline cases, there is wide consensus among toy historians and collectors on what truly makes a toy, a toy in the strictest sense. Boys have played with foot soldiers and horse soldiers. Girls have always had their precious dolls. Although the earliest of these toys have not survived, these remain true and had been so since the third millennium B.C.

The earliest known dolls were made of various materials such as wood, terra-cotta and fabric. The period after World War II brought novelties in design and an entire new range of plastics.

Mechanical toys became popular as class alignments changed. This fact, coupled with more ingenious manufacturing techniques evolved into fantastic musical automata, animals, and images that utilized clockwork to mimic human movement. The aim for toy makers has been towards movement and the many different methods of inducing it in toys. It has assumed great importance and had become a subject dealt with fully in specialized reference works.

Because of new production techniques, an overwhelming quantity of toys, games and amusements for children had been available by the mid 19th century. German inventiveness pioneered novel and intriguing designs, ranging from simple knickknacks in tin or the softwoods, which were known in Britain as “penny toys”, to constructional and educational games that reflected the growing vogue of science in the nursery.

English girls during the reign of reign of Queen Victoria, began to follow the customs of their German and Austrian counterparts by learning about housecraft and baby care. By the turn of the 20th century, it was not unusual to find inexpensive dolls, dolls’ houses, and “German kitchens” in middle-class family homes.

Today, the spread of modern production techniques has made additional millions of persons more conscious of toys in respect to their function, design and usefulness, and their many cultural aspects as well. And although refinements in the application of radio, electronics, magnetism, dry-cell batteries, and so on, have revolutionized certain toys, the folktoy has come into its own again in India, China, Central Europe, Japan, Mexico, Russia and Scandinavia, thus balancing mechanized trends with the addition of less complex technical artistry and beauty.

Parents only want the best things for their children. Our kids deserve to be showered with all the love and affection and this also applies with the kinds of toys we give them. Most parents tend to believe that the best and appropriate toys for their children do not come cheap. Many of us get easily swayed by the masterful hype created by some toy manufacturers and convince us that what they offer, which are expensive, are the best for our children.

When selecting the right and appropriate toys, parents must understand the special needs of their child. The dimensions of our child’s development include-creative, intellectual, physical, sensory, social and personality. The best toys for your child, besides providing entertainment and fun experience, are the ones that provide an enriching learning experience and develop his basic skills. It is essential for the parent to evaluate what learning experience your child will have when playing with the toy.

Here are some useful and practical tips to consider when buying toddler toys:

•Toys must be age-appropriate. The toys must be both entertaining and stimulating. While we may believe the manufacturer’s age recommendation is based on well researched guideline, we tend to convince ourselves that our kids are smarter than average.

•Kids enjoy choosing their own toy. Our kids already have distinct personalities, with their own tastes and interests. At their tender age, they can already be involved, with our guidance, in the actual selection of which toys to buy. Sometimes, it also healthy for you to introduce new ideas that might arouse the interest of your child.

•Consider toys that arouse your child’s curiosity. Parents can reinforce the interest of the child on new things by being sensitive on how the child reacts to certain stimulus or events in his surroundings. Some toddler toys, which are interactive in nature, are highly recommended to develop his interest on new things.

•Allow for a demonstration of the toy. Sometimes, a visual demonstration of how the toy works would be a clear gauge whether your kid will like it or not, or if it will have the stimulating effect on your child’s mind.

•Consider who makes the toy. The safety of our child should be our paramount concern. Beyond the educational as well as entertainment value of a toy, parents should carefully assess its safety profile. Parents must do extra research of both the toy and the manufacturer and make a wise assessment whether a toy is safe or not.

•Participate in your child’s play. Spend some quality time with your child while he is at play. It is one of the most stimulating activities you can share with your child. You can also assess the safety of the toys while guiding him play with it.

•Consider the color of the toy. Kids are normally attracted to bright colors. They also positively respond to multi-colored toys. Our kid’s visual perception is sharpened by introducing toys with bright, vivid and contrasting colors.

In the final analysis, price is not the right indicator of the best toys for our child. You may buy the most expensive toys that are on sale, yet this does not mean that it is easy and appropriate for kid’s play, beneficial, meaningful and right for our child’s development and growth.

Thus, it is imperative that parents give their child only the best toddler toys to aid in his proper development.

Each child develops at a different pace. There are those who develop quicker and there are those whose development lag behind others. If you want your child to become an achiever and to shine above his peers, be sure to give him all the attention, support, and encouragement he deserves. Moreover, give him toddler toys which can help develop his aptitude.

What are the best toddler toys for your baby?

There are many kinds of toddler toys. Toy makers have developed toys for specific age groups. In buying a toy for your precious toddler, make sure that the toy is designed especially for children his age.

For the one-year old toddler, it is best to buy him toys which can be filled and emptied. Two- to six-piece puzzles are also good. These toddler toys help develop the child’s ability in forming mental images of things.

Other toys best for this age group are squeeze toys, colored balls, assorted sizes of unbreakable mirrors, toy trucks, and colored books with vibrant and colorful pictures. Toddler toys like these help improve the child’s grasping and releasing ability, develop self-discovery, enhance creativity and imagination, and develop his conceptual development. Furthermore, toys that are imitations of real gadgets such as toy POS machines and toy cellular phones cultivate a child’s problem-solving skill and social and language development.

For the two-year old toddler, toddler toys such as mini cassettes, toy phones, toy trucks, building blocks, books of rhymes, picture books, and toys which let them play and hear music are the best. At two years old, a child can already form mental images of things, actions, and concepts. Likewise, he can already grasp the concept of simple puzzles and shape-sorting toys. He also hums and tries to sing and enjoys looking at colorful books. Giving him such toys would help develop these abilities.

At three-years old, a child already has the ability to speak clearly. It is at this period that he begins to ask questions about anything and everything that catches his fancy. This is the best opportunity to develop his mental ability. Toddler toys that are best for this age group are coloring books, toy PC, alphabet puzzles, easel companion sets, latches board, doll houses, dolls, and furniture set. Building blocks can also aid in the mental development of a three-year old.

Toy stores offer a wide variety of toddler toys. Make sure that when you buy a toy for your toddler, you buy only those which are safe for your precious one. Do not just buy any toy which catches your fancy. Buy those which have passed quality assurance and are truly baby-friendly.

There are children and there are toys. Something as simple as a rock or a stick can be turned into a toy by your child. But what is different about an educational toy is that it aims to help in the development of your child: intellectually, emotionally, or even physically. It combines the fun of toys with the importance of learning something. It can teach your child a certain skill, like hand-eye coordination or a motor skill. It can also help him or her realize what he or she is good at. This last point is important because the Multiple Intelligence Theory by Howard Gardner says that there is no single definition of intelligence; there are actually many types. With proper nurturing and the right set of toys, you could help your child discover and develop his or her potential.

But just looking around, you will find that there are lots of toys that claim to be “educational.” Finding the right one can be quite hard because there are so many. But here are some pointers to know what the right educational toy for your child easier:

1.) Your child’s age is an important consideration. While some toys are quite universal in the sense that they can be picked up by anybody (even adults), some of these toys may have little parts that could be swallowed by your child and potentially could be dangerous. The other point to consider is that certain skills are developed at specific age groups. Younger children are fascinated by what they can do and with their senses. This can be made into a good way to develop their motor skills. Good toys for younger children include toys that make sounds, filling blocks, and particularly those that include shapes (like clay). Older children who are learning how to read should be challenged by giving them books like pop-up books or picture books. Flash cards and chalk boards will help reinforce what they are learning.

2.) Make sure the toy you are buying for your child is interesting and fun for him or her and not only for you. If it is not fun, the toy will end up being ignored, and forcing your child to play with it and pick it up will only make him or her resent you. You also have to remember that some children have very short attention spans, so if a toy is fun, your child will not notice that lessons are being taught to him or her. Your child will also keep on playing with it because he or she is enjoying it. When your child enjoys the toy, it stimulates the brain and prepares him or her for learning.

3.) Giving your child toys that encourage make-believe and creative thinking develop his or her imagination. Toys like this include building blocks, action figures, dolls, coloring books and cars. Another thing is that children like to emulate their parents. This is especially true for older children who like to role play and pretend to do what “grownups” do. A cooking set, a doctor’s kit, or archeology tools can be especially helpful in fostering their creativity and imagination.
Always remember that educational toys are not enough for a child’s holistic growth. Toys are just tools to help your child grow and cannot replace the love, care, and affection that you give to your child. In fact, participating in your child’s playtime is a good way to do both.
